Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages
• IPv6 is the solution to the global issue of depleted address space.
As demand for IP addresses increases, IPv6 will be a vital component
in meeting those demands.
• Reliability and faster speeds with multicast addresses that can
handle bandwidth-intensive packet flows.
• Eliminates the need for network address translation (NAT)
• More robust network security.
• Routing efficiency.
• Internet protocol security ensures data privacy and integrity.
Disadvantages/Limitations
• Long implementation time: IPv4 is widespread and it will take a long
time to completely shift to IPv6.
• Compatibility: IPv4 and IPv6 machines cannot communicate directly
with each other.
• High Cost: It is expensive to buy the necessary infrastructure, and
organizations and ISPs have to retrain their employees. Completely
migrating to IPv6 would require that all stakeholders put in the
necessary infrastructure to keep up with internet standards which is
very expensive.
• DNS issues: DNS data can be a challenge with IPv6 as it is complex.
